Join local potter Jess Stiles for our one-day improvers throwing workshop, which is perfect for those looking for additional support to improve their throwing technique and broaden their skills

Sunday 16th March 2025, 10.30am - 4pm

Perhaps you'd like to try new forms, consolidate what you already know, or improve your technique and lose the bad habits?

During this workshop, you can explore …

  • Consistent throwing tips and techniques

  • Form and function

  • Personalisation and expression - how to stand out from the crowd and develop your artistic voice.

  • Throwing with larger amounts of clay

  • Throwing for production (minimising trimming/turning)

  • Techniques and approaches for lidded forms, plates, bowls, teapots and bottles*

*We won't have time in this workshop for turning/trimming pots or leather hard attachments (handles/knobs etc) but we can discuss & practice the throwing skills needed to complete these forms

Your tutor will be the amazing Jess Stiles

Jess is a skilled small-batch potter who revels in atmospheric firings such as wood, soda and raku. Jess’ work focuses on traditional thrown forms with sgraffito decoration, and she leaves the surface decoration to wood-firing and ash glazes to weave their magic. Jess also runs her own pottery business Towpath Pottery where she has been teaching and selling her stunning pots from the UK's canals for the past 5 years. You can see more of Jess’ work here: https://www.instagram.com/jessica._stiles/ and https://www.instagram.com/towpathpottery/

Things to note - please read before booking:

  • This workshop is designed for individuals (adults 18yrs+) who have completed at least one throwing course and are ready to refine their practice. Participants will receive tips to improve their technique and expand their throwing repertoire with specific forms. This workshop is not suitable for complete beginners.

  • Please complete the booking form detailing specifically what you‘d like to focus on during the session so we are prepared. It’s best to focus on a specific form or technique so you can get the most out of the session.

  • Recommended, but not essential: Bring in 3-5 pots that you have made to be able to assist in looking at guidance for improvements and to learn a bit about your personal style.

  • If you work with a specific clay then you are welcome to bring this with you but you will need to take your wheel slops and waste clay home with you so bring a bucket with a lid and a bag.

  • All work from the session using MFP clay will be recycled. If you bring your clay, you are welcome to take your work away with you, but you will need to bring your own boards to place your work on.

  • What to bring along - notebook + pencil/pen; any preferred throwing tools; apron and a hand towel; phone to take videos or pictures of your WIP; packed lunch as we’ll stop for a 30mins communal lunch.

  • Wear some warmer layers for the winter months - we have heating but you will be seated so warm thin layers work well.

  • Please inform us at the time of booking if you have any accessibility requirements (such as being differently abled, reduced mobility, neurodiverse etc) or health issues that we need to be aware of (such as balance issues, low blood pressure, allergies etc).

  • Complimentary tea, coffee and biscuits will be available throughout the day. We only have oat milk on site as we are trying to reduce our ecological footprint.

  • We have hot water, WC and kitchen facilities with a kettle, fridge and microwave plus cutlery and crockery. Parking is free on site.

  • Workshops are non-refundable and non-transferable without exception. Please check you can attend the date/time before booking as mistakes cannot be rectified afterwards, and we can't reimburse you or offer catch-ups for a missed session. We are a small business and need classes to run at full occupancy so we can keep the lights on and our bellies full!
